Compound Interest Example
Suppose you invest $20,000 in a five-year bond that earns 3.25% interest compounded annually. Assuming the interest remains invested, the balance would grow approximately as follows:

- End of year two: $21,321
- End of year three: $22,014
- End of year four: $22,730
- End of year five: $23,468
With simple interest at the same rate, the investment would be worth $23,250 after five years. The difference is only $218 over this relatively short period.
Time makes the difference much more substantial. If the same $20,000 earned 3.25% annually for 50 years, it would grow to approximately $98,977 with annual compounding. With simple interest, it would reach only $52,500.
This example assumes a fixed interest rate, no additional deposits or withdrawals, and no taxes, fees, or changes in investment value.
Why Time Matters
Compound interest is most effective when earnings are given enough time to generate additional earnings. Starting earlier can therefore be more valuable than trying to make much larger contributions later.
The idea is frequently linked to Albert Einstein through several popular quotations. However, there is no reliable evidence that he made those statements. A clearer real-world example is investor Warren Buffett, whose long-term approach demonstrates how reinvesting returns over many decades can produce extraordinary growth.
